This Week’s Color-A-Page: Swiss Sechseläuten Spring Festival!!

In the United States the 15th of April is a dreaded day….TAX DAY. I thought about drawing about that…but how boring is tax day? So I sniffed around the internet a bit and found this great Swiss holiday!

ColorAPage_Sechseläuten

The Sechseläuten (Zürich German: Sächsilüüte) is a traditional spring holiday in the Swiss city of Zürich celebrated on the 3rd Monday of April, since the early 20th century. Following the parade of the Zünfte (guilds), the climax of the holiday is the burning of Winter in effigy, in the form of the Böögg, a figure of a snowman prepared with explosives. The custom of burning a ragdoll called Böögg predates the Sechseläuten. A Böögg (cognate to bogey) was originally a masked character doing mischief and frightening children during the carnival season. Popular tradition has it that the time between the lighting of the pyre and the explosion of the Böögg`s head is indicative of the coming summer: a quick explosion promises a warm, sunny summer, a drawn-out burning a cold and rainy one. The shortest time on record is 5:07 minutes in 1974, and the longest in 2001 with 26:23.

February Creativity: Day Thirty One….Clean your Workspace!

Are you a messy worker? Are you “functionally” disorganized? Me too!
It’s funny though… I can begin a new project on a messy desk, but I cannot begin cooking with a messy kitchen…weird? I think so.

I believe having a clean workspace when starting a new project takes away some subliminal stress we carry in messy zones. Starting with a clear workspace gives me a clear mind free of distractions to begin without any hinderances. And without those pesky hinderances I can be more creative! TA-DA!!! win win.

That being said…I cleaned my desk 🙂 (applause)

ok…so maybe you don’t see much of a difference because we have a lot of stuff and not a lot of space, but…

…I feel like….

February Creativity: Day Twenty Nine….Stop Trying to Be Someone Else’s Perfect!

Unknown

Again, I feel like this is one of those truths that is easier in words than in application.

All I can really say is…just do it folks, Do your best to be yourself and do more of what makes you happy…not what others deem important, necessary or what is and isn’t perfect. Perfect in not attainable, stop trying and just be you.

’nuff said.

Stay tuned…TOMORROW: Got an Idea? Write it Down!

February Creativity: Day Twenty Eight….Create A Framework!

What the heck is a framework?

frame·work  [freym-wurk]

n.

1. A structure for supporting or enclosing something else, especially a skeletal support used as the basis for something being constructed.
2. An external work platform; a scaffold.
3. A fundamental structure, as for a written work.
4. A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality.

ahhhhhh…..
A FUNDEMENTAL STRUCTURE.
Basically, TIME MANAGEMENT and TASK PRIORITIZATION.
ok, got it.

We all need structure to complete what needs to be done. Without structure we wander aimlessly….
SOmetimes the structure needs to be broken, essentially it is just a set of guidelines to help keep us on track. To keep our creative priorities at the top of our lists by creating a structure that allows for productivity, and not time wasting on the non-productive aspects of our lives/jos.

I read this interesting article on Creating a Framework for Productivity, and I am totally going to steal his basic principles and apply them to my situation…gotta love appropriation right? He basically says you need to set time aside for both the “mundane” and “creative” tasks in your life to “get them out of the way” and to make more room for “real work”, the projects your want to finish. Some people just say it better 🙂

Basic Concepts:
1. Create a system for the mundane/repetitive tasks that you do everyday. A checklist or folder…..
“Taking care of the simple and mundane stuff everyday is a key part of creating your productivity framework. Without it, you will always have that sinking feeling that something is “falling through the cracks”.”

2. Block out time for the creative tasks you do everyday.
“These are things that I need to do everyday to keep my creative energy flowing and to allow myself to do something other than think about “real work”.There are a couple of creative tasks that I have now that repeat every single day including writing 750 words and working for at least an hour on my web app idea. This time is blocked out everyday, so no matter what I am doing two things that benefit my spirit and sanity.”

3. Move your projects forward and accomplish your goals.
Management Tips to increase productivity
  – Prepare in advance (lists of the days project goals
– Schedule your time
– Start Early
– Be organized (at least have a system for your functioning disorganization 🙂
– Utilize your Prime Time (the time of day when you work best)

I am now revising my daily schedule. It is hard being freelance because it is SO EASY to change my schedule on the fly, have coffee with a friend, etc. It is hard because when people know that you work from home they assume that you are automatically free at any moment. But if I want to REALLY be truthful…I am the BIGGEST TIME WASTER OF ALLLLL TIIIIIME!!!

400-06089439

I have a hard time with this….So I will reivise my daily schedule, my framework, and be FIRM in keeping to my “working hours”. (which really means eliminating my Facebook time…and reading time…and staring into space time….) (PS> Facebook is the DEVIL!)

Here I go!
Good luck with YOUR new framework!!

Stay tuned…TOMORROW: Stop Trying to be Someone Else’s Perfect!

February Creativity: Day Twenty Seven….Read a Page of the Dictionary!

It’s crazy.
I DO NOT own an English dictionary? Really?
Apparently I rely WAY too much on the internet……
So I improvised to day with one of the dictionaries I DO have. My mini Turkish-English Dictionary that I carry around in my bag everyday 🙂 I also have a Spanish-English dictionary but since Turkish is more of a minority language I thought it would be more fun to share!

photo-4But then after reading the page I was disappointed because I knew all of the words…the English ones that is….
But what is the creativity purpose of this Day? To learn new words and maybe use them as fuel for creativity no? hmmm…
Well, there are no new English words for me here…but I am surprised that “skittles” is in here? WTF?

I guess I need to invest in a good English dictionary!

Stay tuned…TOMORROW: Create a Framework!

February Creativity: Day Twenty Five….Do More of What Makes you Happy!

“ Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of 80 and gradually approach 18. ”

— Mark Twain

are-you-happy

Sometimes I wish life was as easy as a flow chart….or is it? It seems to me the human race always tend to make things more difficult than they are; there are always excuses using so-called logic to back us up. We prioritize what we deem as important…But in the end, doesn’t everything just come down to making a choice? And just like anything else in our lives….I believe happiness is a choice, at least for those of us that are able to read this right now.

For those countries full of strife and oppression, like most of Africa and other 3rd world countries (read this interesting article about the happiest and saddest countries in the world) no…it isn’t a choice. No matter how optimistic you are. When confronted with horrible living conditions and censorship of personal rights it is basically impossible to be happy. So for those of us NOT living in those regions of the world, what’s our problem?

For us, it IS as easy as a flow chart. If you aren’t happy…CHANGE SOMETHING!

DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!

Are you a paper pusher who secretly wishes to be a horse trainer?
Are you a construction worker who writes poetry on your lunch break?
Whatever your situation….

QUIT! AND DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!
Even if it means taking a pay cut. DO IT.
You may have to rearrange your entire life to make it happen. DO IT.
Or if you can’t quit your day job then MAKE ROOM in your schedule to do what you love! You want to be a watercolorist? Tell your day job that you can’t work on Mondays…and devote all that time to what you love to do. FIND A WAY!

Don’t know what makes you happy? FIGURE IT OUT!
If it is regards to a career..check this gal out, she’s a career coach with “When I Grow Up”

Life is WAY damn too short and we are too damn blessed to be in countries where we have the FREEDOM to do/be whatever our heart desires. So why waste that opportunity?

Just. Do. it.

…………………..

Stay tuned…TOMORROW: Don’t Force it!
To see the full list go HERE.

February Creativity: Day Twenty Three….Take Risks

Risks? Really?

ok…..I take risks EVERY DAY by walking on the street in Istanbul…riding buses in Istanbul…taking taxis or ANY kind of public transport in Istanbul. Crazies I tell you!!! I put my life at risk trying to get from point A to point B.

Why don’t I get a car you say? Because I have an even higher risk of DYING from the crazies on the road! OMG! At this moment in my life the LAST thing I need is more risks..thank you very much!!

Its really hard to explain what really is happening with the transport around here, I wish I have taken pics of what I have seen…I was no so successful online so my words and this guys article will have to suffice. The guy in the article describes a few Turkish driving habits as follows (and I agree with every one):

  • They don’t like indicators, traffic lights, paying attention to pedestrians, signals or road rules.
  • They do like honking their horn, continuously. Even at police cars.
  • They also like to randomly drive in reverse. If you are in the way, look out!
  • Turkish drivers will also stop unexpectedly, presumably just to annoy you.

I would like to add:

  • Any choice you make on the road is automatically Okay if you turn your hazard lights on. Even if you are going against the flow of traffic and on the sidewalk.
  • Bus drivers on the phone….totally normal.
  • Dolmuşes (mini buses) so full of people that the driver just leaves the doors open and people are literally hanging out of it. I see it everyday. I WISH I had a picture!

True story. Today….My husband and I are walking down the street. We cross the stree (legally with the green light and everything) and this guy in a van backs out randomly without looking, almost runs me over…my husband (who was a few steps ahead of me) kicks the van to get his attention and he looks and continues and I am almost smooshed. The driver backs out from the alleyway into the main street in the middle of the way, stops traffic, people are honking and getting irate…..and why does the driver do all of this? oh…to just pull back into the alley way!!!??? WHAT? ugggghhhh….

Don’t get me wrong…Turkey is AWESOME in SO many ways…but driving and transport efficiency? NOT one of them.

Some pics for your enjoyment:

This one happened just last week!
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-CI8tTQvF0&w=420&h=315]

And this one is my ultimate favorite (you KNOW that guy on the bridge ate it big time 🙁  )….also note: the drivers continue to pass the wreckage!!!!
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZkwS64Q04Y&w=420&h=315]

Need I say more? Until I leave Turkey…NO risks for me! hahah!

Stay tuned…TOMORROW: Break the Rules!

February Creativity: Day TwentyTwo….Get Lots of Rest

Yeah baby.

sleep_cat

I am not stingy when it comes to resting 🙂 I may be a little too “rest-inclined” for most people’s tastes. haha. I do have an advantage though. I do not have a demanding job nor children…I only have a husband to distract me 🙂

Today I took FULL advantage of “Getting lots of Rest”…you know….for my Creativity….
I woke up at 10:15 am. and it was AWESOME! I then took my time to arrive at the gym…you know…I dont want to “over” do-it….gotta rest today.

And the rest of the day just flew by. I did some laundry, cleaned up a little bit…but not too much….gotta watch my rest-o-meter….., then I updated my blog. And now it is night and I have to think of something for dinner.

Le sighhhh….

I like these resting days…I may even go to bed early to be sure that I have fulfilled my creativity quota for the day 🙂

Stay tuned…TOMORROW: Take Risks!

February Creativity: Day TwentyOne….Count Your Blessings

Ohhh man. Am I blessed. Let me count the ways…..

Not only am I blessed with a “plethora of family and friends” like I said in yesterday’s post…..
My family is HUGE and the branches of the tree stretch for miles…
I am blessed to still have my parents and most of my Grandparents….and a relationship with them…
To have a family who loves me…
To have an AMAZING husband that treats me the way any woman wishes to be treated…
I have a roof over my head…
I have food in my belly (sometimes too much)…
There is not too much debt…
I have the option to work or not to work…
I have the time and means to pursue my hobbies…
I can travel the world….
I am healthy….and if I’m not I have insurance…

I mean, holy crap! I am so blessed in so many ways! Once you start a list that realization dawns :)-

Anyone who sees this list, or has a similar list….or maybe there are less things on the list but they are the most important…or maybe your list is completely different, it doesn’t matter. We are all blessed with something, whether we see it or not! I am thankful for what I have, are you?

count-your-blessings

Try and use what you have in your life as inspiration…as a means to bloom your creativity….and your existence 🙂
Good luck!
