Shout Out to Türkiye! “Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı”

All of you may not know but my husband and I have lived in Istanbul for the last 1,5 years. Today is “Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı” which translates as “The Holiday of National Sovereignty and Children”) orrrrrrr just “Children’s Day.” So I thought it was due time to represent our Turkish home 😉

I heard somewhere that it is was the first country to celebrates it? Starting in the 1920’s I think…. I’m not.sure about the accuracy of that…anyone know?

Anyway…here here! to all the kiddies out there…especially the adorable turkish ones <3
Have fun coloring! Don’t forget to email me your colored pages so I can share them on my blog!

Earth Day Color-A-Page

Hey Everyone!

Next Monday is Earth Day. It makes me a little sad that we only celebrate our mighty earth one day a year…it makes me even sadder that the other 364 days we are destroying her. I am just as guilty as the next person 🙁 I am too selfish to give up the commodity and ease that our modern life has provided us with even though I know how detrimental it is to our planet. But how do we change this? How do we revert back to a time without those commodities? Is it even possible?

Can we live without our bottled waters?… meaning we need our own well source, or going to the river each day to gather the day’s water ration?
Can we live without our vehicles?… meaning riding your bicycle, horse, or walking to and from the places you need to go?
Can we live without our computers and paper? … meaning we need to write on bark or rock walls and communicate in person?

Are we humble enough or physically capable to revert? Can we undo what knowledge has been done? I don’t think so.
I mean, this very project….Color-A-Page, encourages people to use their computers and print on their paper….I am just as guilty as my neighbor.

I think the more realistic question is… are we capable of using the knowledge we have to BETTER the way we live? To utilize our “advanced” noggins to come up with a non-destructive way to live with the commodities that we have? I mean, all the other “inferior” species on this planet have not destroyed our habitat. The deer and the trees and the fish in the seas… they live and they die, the circle of life. Our GREAT species seems to try and change that circle, and in the process eliminating all the other living creatures…why?

…..We truly will be the end of ourselves and it makes me really sad.

Sorry to be such a downer, but this is such a horribly depressing yet realistic topic.
But on a somewhat happier note, this weeks Color-A-Page is an ode to our Mother Earth, and Earth Day. May she live long.

This Week’s Color-A-Page: Swiss Sechseläuten Spring Festival!!

In the United States the 15th of April is a dreaded day….TAX DAY. I thought about drawing about that…but how boring is tax day? So I sniffed around the internet a bit and found this great Swiss holiday!

The Sechseläuten (Zürich German: Sächsilüüte) is a traditional spring holiday in the Swiss city of Zürich celebrated on the 3rd Monday of April, since the early 20th century. Following the parade of the Zünfte (guilds), the climax of the holiday is the burning of Winter in effigy, in the form of the Böögg, a figure of a snowman prepared with explosives. The custom of burning a ragdoll called Böögg predates the Sechseläuten. A Böögg (cognate to bogey) was originally a masked character doing mischief and frightening children during the carnival season. Popular tradition has it that the time between the lighting of the pyre and the explosion of the Böögg`s head is indicative of the coming summer: a quick explosion promises a warm, sunny summer, a drawn-out burning a cold and rainy one. The shortest time on record is 5:07 minutes in 1974, and the longest in 2001 with 26:23.

Color-A-Page is heeeeere! “Qingming” whaaaat?

Qingming Festival. aka “Tomb Sweeping Day”

So I read about this really cool festival in some parts of East Asia…..Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and some places in China.

Ever thought to respect the memory of your dead ancestors? I must admit I havn’t….until now! I think it’s a great festival! Who are we without our family and our history? So it has officially been added to Color-A-Page!

There are many traditional activities involves with this festival as stated in this article. But the most intriguing to me are the kites!

Flying kites is a traditional activity on Qingming Festival or Tomb-Sweeping Day. People like flying kites on Qingming Festival or Tomb-Sweeping Day, no matter in the daytime or at night. In the evening, they attach strings of little colorful lanterns to the kite or the thread, which look like twinkling stars in the sky, giving them the name “sacred lantern”. In the past, some people would cut off the thread when the kite flew to the sky, letting it drift to wherever the wind took it. It is said that this can cure diseases, prevent disasters and bring good luck.

  • A printer–our template comes in pdf form
  • Construction paper, white printer paper or foam sheets (which is what we used to decorate our puppets)
  • Pieces of felt or material
  • Scissors
  • Wiggle eyes
  • Glue stick, white glue or a glue gun (adult supervision required)
  • Markers, crayons, colored pencils (your choice)
  • Download Hand puppet template (to the left)

  • Print out the template for the basic pattern.
  • Cut out the template. Pin it to a piece of felt or other fabric and cut out two pieces.
  • Glue or sew the two felt/fabric pieces together.
  • Decorate the other template pieces to your liking using either crayons, colored pencils, markers or colored foam sheets.
  • Use pictures as reference for the placement of the body parts on the hand puppet.
  • Create your own unique creature or person puppet.
  • That’s it….let the glue dry before you start playing and performing with your puppets!

Activities for puppets:

  • Act out a storybook and create a new ending.
  • Practice script to preform as a puppet play.
  • Watch YouTube videos of puppet plays for example.
  • Go to see a live puppet show.
  • Explore joke books to learn new jokes to use in your puppet skits.
  • Construct your own puppet theatre. Appliance boxes work really well.
  • Start a collection of puppets and define the personality traits they will protray in plays.

Book Design & layout – The Guitar Gym Workbook

This project was a fun one. The people of The Guitar Gym in San Luis Obispo, CA have come up with a great way to teach guitar…without notes or reading music! Its brilliant, and patented! So, do’t think you can steal their ingenious! neener neener! Gian and Chris Minardi are the owners of the Guitar Gym and they have a lesson plan for their 7-12 year old students called “Island Rhythm and Blues” where they use an island/travel theme to help the students learn a Blues chord.

When they came to me, their “lesson plan” was a bunch of haphazard papers thrown into a folder. Their ideas are abundant but their knowledge of of design and organization is a little less abundant 🙂 So,I helped them create a cohesive lesson plan booklet using their methods and my oranization skills.

Project: Island Rhythm & Blues: Guitar workbook

Client:  Gian Minardi, The Guitar Gym

  • 8.5″x11″ workbook. Spiral bound for easy placement on music stands for playing guitar.
  • Color coded chapters to help with navigation
  • Each lesson chapter intro is an illustrated spread to introduce the new chord (character), and place the names of the chords with faces of children with whom the students can identify.
  • Illustrations include: 3 chord characters: Bob, Alex, Ed; The spinner and scroll, passport for lesson completed stamp
  • This project was my senior project in college in 2009, it can be viewed HERE
